HamiltonGoodreads Choice Award for Best Science Fiction NovelTo Sleep in a Sea of Stars is a masterful epic science fiction novel from the New York Times and Sunday Times bestselling author of the Inheritance Cycle, Christopher Paolini. Paolini definitely had fun when writing this book and planted plenty of fun things for his readers to discover.'Action-packed SF adventure that zings along at hyperluminal speed' - Peter F. This book will not before everyone, but if this review peaked your interest then you should definitely add To Sleep In a Sea of Stars to your reading list! Reading Tips However, I still found it highly created, thoroughly researched and methodically crafted. This book does not stack up to the greatest works in this genre. If you are a hard core science fiction fan, you may find Paolini’s attempt a bit too juvenille. If you’re up for tackling the large page count that is. Due to Paolini’s easy prose and efforts to limit delving into his science, I believe this book is a good entry to the science fiction genre. He published his first novel, Eragon, in 2003 at the age of 19, and quickly became a publishing phenomenon. His Inheritance Cycle Eragon and its three sequels have sold nearly 40 million copies worldwide. To Sleep in a Sea of Stars is his first adult novel. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed To Sleep In a Sea of Stars. Christopher Paolini was born in Southern California and has lived most of his life in Paradise Valley, Montana with his family. As such, it contains a level of adult language, innuendo and sex scenes.

Rather, knowing my stories within this world are to come, I viewed them as opportunities for these future stories – whether full novels, novellas or short stories.įinally, it should be noted that unlike the Inheritance Cycle, this book is adult. Similarly, with the vast universe Paolini created, he limited his world building to items which specifically affect this particular story and does not expand much outside it.įor me, these flaws did not negatively impact my enjoyment of the book. While I liked all the characters and had my favorites, I did not feel extreme attachment for any of them. During these slower times, Paolini does dive into his characters, but only slightly. With the main story clocking in at 822 pages and following appendices adding an additional 50 pages, many are finding the book to be a bit bloated.Īs a plot driven novel, a lot of action occurs throughout the story broken up by slower periods traveling through space. The biggest flaw this book suffers is its size. Overall, I was impressed with the time and care Paolini clearly put into this book. This includes entirely new races of aliens with unique cultures, languages and technology. I can only imagine the fun Paolini had writing Gregorovich’s dialogue.įinally, Paolini incorporates familiar traits of the genre while introducing some new, unique concepts. One of my most favorite characters is Gregorovich, a ship mind. The main set of secondary characters is a ragtag crew, and all captured my heart. Secondly, the contains a great number of characters with varying roles of importance. In fact, in his afterward Paolini explains he strove to create a world bound by physics (admittedly with some bends, but no breaks). Additionally, the science and technology feel real and possible. While Paolini fills his story with science and technology, he conveys the concepts in a natural and easy to grasp manner. The effort to grasp the science takes you out of the story, but that is not the case with To Sleep In a Sea of Stars. Other science fiction books I’ve read, such as Neuromancer, can bog down the reading experience. To start, I think Paolini did a phenomenal job with the science of this story. Consequences which change Kira’s future and threaten all of humanity.
